We run a comprehensive programme of
Grade Camps, each of which has a
specific focus. These camps are in
addition to the excursions organized
by individual learning areas or
subjects.
Once they have adapted to life in a
boarding school, Grade 8 students go
on Outward Bound - a programme which
focuses on personal development and
teamwork. Grade 9 students go on a
longer, more intense Outward Bound
experience.
In 2010, Grade 8 students went to a
leadership camp in Pilanesberg. The
four-day camp included adventure and
teamwork activities, combined with
game drives, walks and visits to an
elephant sanctuary and snake park.
Grade 8 students will go to Pilanesberg in November 2010 after
writing their year-end exams.
Junior students have also attended
camps at Maropeng, the Cradle of
Humankind, Soweto, Johannesburg,
Pretoria and the Lesedi cultural
village.
The recent Grade 10 excursion was to
the Kwazulu-Natal battlefields,
where guides explained the
strategies and outcomes of battles
from the perspectives of the
British, Zulus and Boers. Durban’s
Indian Ocean was the final stopover,
where many students swam in the sea
for the first time. In addition,
students visited the Marine World
and Sharks Board, and were fortunate
to witness the Sardine Run. |

Grade 11 students recently went on
an expedition to Cape Town for a
leadership camp at Rocklands, near
Simon’s Town. This camp involved a
number of ‘firsts’, including
travelling by air and swimming in
the waves. Highlights of the trip
included visits to the Boulders’
penguins, Cape Point, the University
of Cape Town, Robben Island and
Table Mountain.
As the majority of OWLAG students
have not had an opportunity to
travel within South Africa, we
ensure that expeditions involve
visits to different parts of the
country. These programmes are
designed to enhance students’
understanding of their diverse
heritage, as well as to develop
their leadership and teamwork
abilities. |
