Our mission is to respond to difficulties as they arise, and to proactively work towards the health and well-being of the whole community.

The Wellness Team comprises nurses, psychologists and social workers who work holistically to facilitate healthy development and the realisation of each learner’s potential. In addition, we collaborate with all Academy staff to promote the well-being of staff and learners, and we contribute in any way we can to a climate of mutual respect and trust at the Academy.

We aim to assist learners to reach their full potential at the Academy and in the world beyond, through:

  • Providing emotional and academic support, and
  • Assisting learners to understand themselves and their relationships more fully.

To this end, we offer individual and group therapy for learners, teach life skills in the curriculum and assist in the selection, orientation and adjustment of new learners.

Our philosophy is ‘education for all’ and we strive to foster inclusivity and accommodate diversity in the academic environment. We also aim to instil an enthusiasm for life-long learning. Learning support is provided through:

  • In-class support to ensure optimal learning during the school day.
  • Individual support sessions to meet the unique needs and develop the specific strengths of learners.
  • Support groups to encourage collaborative learning and allow learners to practice newly acquired techniques and strategies.
  • Workshops on time management, study skills and exam techniques to improve each learner’s approach to learning.
  • Assisting learners to apply for various concessions for national exams, as per the Gauteng Department of Education guidelines.

Our Department comprises three nursing sisters who provide 24 hour, on-site, medical care and support to the learners. A consulting doctor is available on campus once a week to see learners and is always available for emergency consults. Our goal is to care for students, educate them to make healthy lifestyle choices, and assist them to reach optimal health through preventative and curative health care. All students have a baseline medical on entering the Academy and have regular checks thereafter. Preventative care includes regular dental and optometry checks, as well as inoculations against communicable diseases. From the curative perspective, we address any medical complaints as they arise and refer students where necessary for specialist care.

Our goal is to strengthen the links between the Academy, the learners’ families and their broader communities through building relationships and liaising with other service providers (such as government departments and NGOs). Our programme includes: conducting home visits; facilitating group work with learners; providing psychosocial education to families on issues relevant to particular communities; and conducting community outreach to empower families to improve their social situations. In all of our work, we maintain a non-judgmental attitude, are respectful of client self-determination and focus on developing existing strengths in the learners’ families and communities.
