Music has been an integral part of
the curriculum at OWLAG since the
inception of the Academy in 2007.
All Grade 8 to 9 students receive
scheduled classes in music as
prescribed by the Gauteng Department
of Education curriculum. Since the
end of 2008, a significant expansion
took place which makes provision for
individual and group tuition in 16
instruments, including voice. This
is provided by 19 part- time music
coaches, each of whom specialises in
a particular field.
Participation in the “expanded”
programme is voluntary. At present,
38% of all students are enrolled.
This figure goes up to 50% if
participation in the choir and
various instrumental ensembles is
included. The numerous individual
studies are accredited by
independent annual examinations
which are administered by the
internationally recognised Trinity
Guildhall College in London.
Music is regarded as fundamental to
the life of the Academy, where it
serves as a vehicle for enhancing
social, cultural and academic life.
